This month, the founders here at Cigars.com have decided to shine our spotlight on one of the most popular and esteemed blenders in the industry. Willy Herrera got his start several years ago in Miami and has since become the master blender for one of the largest manufacturers in the world, Drew Estate. He is responsible for some of the highest rated lines to come out of Nicaragua in the past decade and brought his own signature style to Drew Estate.
Willy began his journey in Little Havana, in the heart of Miami's cigar district. He worked for most of his early career at his family's factory, El Titan de Bronze. While there he crafted several blends for famed companies such as La Palina, Ernesto Padilla, and Nestor Miranda. It is around this time that he caught the eye of Jonathan Drew.
At this time, Drew Estate was really beginning to take off in the premium cigar community. Although they had dominated the infused sector for many years, it was the introduction of the Liga Privada and Undercrown line that really opened them up to a whole new demographic. It was then that it was decided that they needed a new boutique blender in order to support the work of the team. Willy Herrera was this blender.
His initial line, the Herrera Esteli, was unlike anything else that Drew had released up to that point. It was considerably more simple in its creative style, but packed with flavor. It became one of Drew's highest rated lines and set the stage for Willy to take a bigger role in the company.
His followup was the highly-coveted Nortena. It was slightly darker and richer then the Herrera Esteli, and ended up in the Top 25 Cigars of the Year. Willy has now been named the Master Blender for Drew Estate and I know we are all looking forward to what he has coming next.
